The use of lightweight metals and composites to replace heavy structural materials for military hardware and weapons systems (ships, aircraft, ground vehicles, etc.) is a new strategic consideration for defence forces; falling under Naval S&T Strategic Plans. The objectives of the workshop were to seek state-of-the-art ideas, from outside of the continental United States, in the field of low-density metallic materials and composites for structural applications, as well as modeling and simulation software tools which are capable of generating and identifying damage evolution data for health monitoring, corrosion control, life prediction and assessment of civil and military hardware systems.

"Covering a wide range of structural concepts and presenting both relevant theories and their applications to actual structures, this book brings together for the first time lightweight structures concepts for many different applications and the relevant scientific literature, thus providing unique insights into a fascinating field of human endeavour. Evolved from a series of graduate courses taught by the authors at the University of Tokyo, the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, the University of Cambridge and the California Institute of Technology, this textbook provides both theoretical and practical insights and presents a range of examples which also provide a history of key lightweight structures since the Apollo age. This essential guide will inspire the imagination of engineers and provide an analytical foundation for all readers"-- Provided by publisher.

The Department of Building Technology at the Faculty of Architecture at TU Delft studies and develops cardboard as a potential building material on a comprehensive basis. An exploratory phase from 2003 to 2005 was concluded by an international symposium. This title comprises the report on that symposium.

The building physics and comfort-relevant properties of gypsum drywall construction make it a particularly sustainable and versatile construction method. The book links the great architectural and sculptural potential of this building method with its construction requirements. Its focus is on the diversity of the system, its specific prerequisites, and its systematic implementation in design ideas. The space concept and elements in existing and new buildings are analyzed, and their implementation illustrated in detail. In addition, numerous examples of details and building components explain the effect of light, color, material, surface, and construction. Drawings at different scales illustrate the tectonic relationships in space.
